I'm just posting the Lord's Prayer here, so I can translate it in urban ebonics on asksnoop.com

Our Father,
Who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy Will be done,
On earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day,
our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

bleh [Feb. 26th, 2004|09:08 am]
No school and nothing to do. I guess I could walk to the corner store and buy something that'd amuse me for about five minutes... Oh, wait. I have no money. Speaking of money, I need it. lots of it. Now.

With a lack of anything better to say, I leave you with one word: Bah.

Exams and the Human-flavoured Ramen [Feb. 1st, 2004|09:16 am]
[mood |accomplished]
[music |"Wind"~By Akeboshi]

Exams are over and I think I'm addicted to Ramen. here's my little rant about "oriental style" flavour ramen noodles.

I'll be abrupt and to the point: Oriental style ramen tastes and smells like old people. I had this hellforsaken meal replacement one fateful day. I opened the package, and his overwhelming smell of celery rushed to my noze. I didn't think it was that bad, then I took the freeze-dried noodles out, put it in a pan, and reached for the bottom of the packet....there it was; the 'oriental flavour'. Now this scared me. billions upon billions of thoughts rushed through my head upon looking at a small silvery packet that said 'oriental' on it. One such though is that it really WAS people.

"What the hell is oriental flavour? What do they do; Take a guy like me and put him in a bowl?"~Dat Phan

Indeed. well, I opened this horrid packet from beyond the grave and inspected its contents. As said earlier, it smelled of elderly people. again, billions of thoughts arose; one of them being: "What kind of sick, necrophilic, sadist would come up with such a concoction?" Another one of them thinking back to that old 50's movie I saw called 'green', which was about the overpopulation of the world, and how they coincidentally 'took care' of the situation, while a new and popular food product, 'soylent green' rose in local grocery store aisles; much to the peoples' dismay when they found out "Soylent green it PEOPLE!"

Well, I was damned hungry and with nothing else to eat; I cooked it. to mask the flavour, I put a LOT of pepper and a scrambled egg for good measure. I ate it andm, lo and behold, it wasn't that bad! in fact, it kinda tasted like mushrooms; which I like.

bleh. just bleh. [Jan. 6th, 2004|03:53 pm]
Today I didn't have to go to school, as there was a snow day... needless to say it was boring. I did homework, shovelled the driveway, and did some martial arts. I think I have to shovel my driveway again... I'm so bored, and I need coffee.

My love of philosophy and other things thereof. [Jan. 3rd, 2004|08:33 pm]
[mood | contemplative]
[music |"Heaven only knows"~K-os]

To start off, I'd like to say that I LOVE philosophy. I can't get enough of it. Right now, I'm reading up on Lao-Tze, Con-fu-tzu (known in english as "Confucius"), and a bit of Zen philosophies. Eastern philosophy is my focus this year. Yes, I am boring and I could care less.

One such philosophy that I'm analysing/contemplating upon is both the Taoist quote "To follow the Tao is to not need fulfillment. Unfulfilled, one may live without renewal", the Amida buddhist saying "One needs not a reason to live. One lives solely because one has life", and the Zen proverb "Remember to LIVE, never to LIVE FOR."

Let me explain this quote in my own words. The majority of the world's population is part of some religion, thus giving them a sense of purpose. For some reason, We as humans have the notion that we were put on this earth for a specific reason. This, although a comforting thought, simply is not true according to these quotes. Said philosophies have basically said that you can live without having a purpose, AND have a richer life because of it. You may ask "how is my life richer/better now that I have absolutely no purpose?"

I'll tell you why. I, as you may be thinking right now, was kind of at odds with myself morally because of my discovery. I thought life would suck without purpose. I mean, it's what drives us to keep going, right? wrong. Soon after my moral crisis, I picked myself back up and realized the benefits of living a non-purpose life. It's total freedom. To religious people, purpose is usually a way to explain why they were placed on earth, they think they're special. 6 billion people, and you yourself think that you're special? no. It's a way of looking forward to what the future holds. I realized that to live without purpose; to live without fulfillment is the ultimate freedom. the word "Purpose" is just another boundary one has to cross to better oneself. Without purpose, I don't need to worry about what the future holds. This means I can enjoy life at present time, instead of waiting for something to happen. I can appreciate things fully without having to think about the detrimental effects.

It's liberating. I live because I'm here, not because I have something predetermined for myself, but because I have to determine my path by myself; and that's a LOT less comforting than purpose, but a lot more rewarding.

Cultural/sub-cultural influences in hip-hop and ITS influence on other music genres [Jan. 3rd, 2004|08:25 pm]
Believe it or not, kiddies, the rap/hip-hop scene isn't just the mainstream stuff that "MTV shoves down your throat". You know which sub-genre of this I speak of; Gangsta rap. Their songs include the praising of drug-abuse, womanising, etc. Unfortunately, people judge this as this being the whole genre. This is not so.

There's a lot more to it than seen at first glance. Just like the punk genre of old; "Oldschool" hip-hop, as it's bcome known as, spoke about things other than what today's mainstream artists speak of. World hunger, poverty, racial profiling, etc. are things they spoke about.

Enter hip-hop subculture. Shortly after oldschool hip-hop's introduction came the beastie boys; a group who introduced straight mc-ing to the late 80's/early 90's skateboarder (now simply known as "skater") culture. Another example would be the introduction to rap-rock (which sounded much different from linkin park, if that's who you had in mind). An oldschool group who went by "Run-DMC" introduced rap-rock to the mainstream with their song "walk this way".

This, in turn opened hip-hop artists' minds to listen to diverse cultures to use for their songs. Today, underground artists, such as the Canadian MC, K-os (pronounced "chaos"), uses reggae, spanish, and oldschool infuences in his songs. Even mainstream artists today sample songs from countries around the world for their songs; Take "Beware the Boys" By Jay-z featuring punjabi MC.

This use of melding world music and using other subcultures for hip-hop music is making a path for other genres of music to do the same. Pfft, and people say hip-hop is demeaning to north american culture.

New year's, new member [Jan. 1st, 2004|09:12 pm]
Well, seeing as it's new year's and I'm a new member, I might as well talk about said topics. I'm a new user to this site, and I guess I'm writing this rather impulsively. My freind showed me his livejournal and I decided I should try it; see how it all fits out. Well, what else can I say. I'm Dave. Hello. Hello indeed. Now, you may ask, "Why is it so important that I read your journal? Why should I read this? what relevance does this have to anything?" My answer to that is quite simply put: I really don't care. As said before, I did this rather impulsively. But now, as I press the letter keys, I feel at peace of sorts. Maybe I should vent a little more. Maybe not. All I know is that I have nothing better to do, so just sit and read.

Where was I? Oh yes, new year's. This year I did SH*T. I sat at home, reading a bit of philosophy stuff, then towards the end of the day, I started to watch TV. they had the countdown... it was a minute long. Longest minute of my life.

I guess that's it for today. I didn't put any effort into this entry; no strenuous mental activity for this. nope. None at all because I didn't feel like it.

'Till next time,

Dave.
